On Saturday, October 18, Team Arrha will be joining the 5th Annual Pawsome 5K at Szot Park in Chicopee. This run/walk is more than a community event, it is a chance to keep loved dogs with their furever families.

The Pawsome 5K supports Kane’s Krusade , a nonprofit that provides dog food, vet care, and housing advocacy for dog owners who are elderly, veterans, disabled, survivors of domestic violence, or experiencing homelessness. For many, these dogs are their only family. Kane’s Krusade helps make sure they can stay together.

There will be medals and prizes for top runners, but the real win is giving back. You can join us on race day, volunteer, or support by donating to Team Arrha here .

We are thrilled to welcome Harry (Chip) Moore III, a leader whose career blends financial expertise, steady guidance, and a genuine commitment to community.

Harry (Chip) Moore III brings more than three decades of leadership in finance, operations, and organizational strategy. Most recently, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Pittsfield Cooperative Bank, where he led financial planning, risk management, and team development while helping guide the bank’s long-term growth.

Throughout his career, Chip has been known for turning ideas into action. He’s launched innovative programs like Bank-Owned Life Insurance (BOLI), Rewards Checking, and overdraft solutions, and has co-managed major projects—including a $1.5 million construction initiative and a $1.2 million branch expansion.

Before joining Pittsfield Cooperative, Chip held leadership roles at Greylock Federal Credit Union and Adams Co-operative Bank, where he honed his expertise in investment oversight, compliance, and strategic planning. Colleagues know him for his steady leadership, clear communication, and ability to connect financial goals with a broader mission.

Chip holds an MBA from the University of Maryland, completed executive banking programs at Babson College and Fairfield University, and earned his bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Westfield State College. Outside of work, he’s deeply involved in his community, having served on boards for the Red Cross, the Berkshire Chamber of Commerce, and the Cheshire Lions Club.

95th Annual Meeting

In accordance with the Bylaws, Arrha Credit Union held its 95th annual meeting on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 145 Industry Avenue, Springfield location. Michael Ostrowski, President & CEO, welcomed everyone to the annual meeting and provided an update that included staff appreciation, focus on continued growth, personalized member service, and new branch location. Staff were applauded for their excellent member service and for sharing the latest Arrha technology with members to keep them safe and support their busy lives.

Chairman Todd Cieplinski thanked everyone for attending and recognized staff and Directors for their hard work and dedication. Jodi Turati, Director, recognized two $1,000 scholarships awarded this year to worthy students based on scholastic merit and civic achievement.

Michael Ostrowski, President & CEO, concluded his annual meeting remarks by expressing gratitude to everyone for their dedication, attendance, and anticipation of another successful year ahead. Chairman Todd Cieplinski ended the meeting by thanking members for their trust in the staff and executive team.

2025 Anthony J. Serafino Scholarships

Jodi Turati, Director, and Scholarship Committee Chair along with Elizabeth Lewis, Director & Scholarship Committee Member recognized two $1,000 scholarship awardees for their scholastic merit and civic achievement.

Criteria used to evaluate the applicants were scholastic achievement, must be a senior high school student, must be a member of Arrha Credit Union or student whose parent is a member; outside activities, community endeavors, and intention to attend a two-year or four-year, degree-granting college or university. All applications and transcripts had to be submitted no later than at the end of business on March 3, 2025. As scholarship winners, we invited them to stop by the credit union and if they open up a checking account, the credit union will deposit $100 into their account.

The following applicants were selected as recipients of the 2025 Anthony J. Serafino Scholarship:

1. Jordyn Rossi, West Springfield High School.

2. Mia Culver, Longmeadow High School.

SmartPhone and Mobile Device Security Tips

Lock Your SmartPhone

Set up a screen lock so the phone cannot be accessed or used without a password. Use a real alphanumeric password, not a 4-digit pin, and ensure the screen is set to lock automatically after 1 to 5 minutes of being idle.

Don't Leave your SmartPhone Unattended

Don't leave your SmartPhone sitting around in public spaces...it's easy to do. Put it in your coat, pocket, briefcase, purse, wherever it can be out of view when not in use.

Don't Give your SmartPhone to Strangers

If someone needs to make an emergency call home and asks to use your phone...don't. Rather than give the person your phone, make the call for them and put it on speaker.

Keep your SmartPhone Up-To-Date
You know those system updates you've been ignoring for a while? Install them. Most SmartPhone system updates include enhancements to device security. When updates are provided by the manufacturer, install them.

Use 'Find My iPhone' or Similar Service

There are free, very easy SmartPhone tools available that allow the tracking and wiping service for Androids, iOS, Windows and Blackberry phones. These tools and services allow the user to lock, track, or wipe their SmartPhone remotely if lost. This not only protects your personal data, but it could help you recover a lost or stolen device.

Don't Download Apps from Untrusted Sources

Do not enable the "non-market Apps" setting on your SmartPhone. These types of Apps are riddled with vulnerabilities. Only install Apps from the SmartPhone manufacturer's approved online App Store.

Do 'SmartPhone Apps' Due Diligence

Do your homework! Read the 'Permissions' screen when you download and install new Apps to your SmartPhone. Many Apps will let you know that they are accessing your location, call history, contacts, and other personal data. Realize too when these Apps deliver your SmartPhone information to other third-party companies for other uses.

Watch Those Attachments!

Be careful about opening attachments sent to your SmartPhone by people you don't know. Many attachments are used by hackers to deploy malicious software and viruses.

Encrypt SmartPhone Data

Most new SmartPhones make it relatively simple to encrypt the contents of the phone. This ensures that even if the phone does fall into the wrong hands and is accessed because the screen lock was bypassed, some level of protection still remains for your personal data.

Call-Forwarding SCAM

Identity thieves have learned how to "Call-Forward" telephone numbers to a fraudulent call center where criminals are stealing identities. Although Arrha Credit Union has implemented the necessary precautions and procedures to prevent the inadvertent disclosure of its membership's confidential information to these thieves, it is highly recommended that you contact your local telephone service company and request that "Call-Forwarding" be disabled, and enable "Password-Protection" on your telephone number, if available.

It is important to always remember, Arrha Credit Union will under NO circumstances send an email or leave voicemail messages on a mobile or home telephone requesting a member to reply to an email or call in to update or verify financial account information

I just want to send out a calming message to our members and community regarding the recent banking news. We are not exposed or have done risky actions such as the banks in the news. This was a situation that should never have occurred.

Furthermore, ALL Arrha deposits are fully insured by the NCUA (up to $250,000) and by MSIC (for any remaining balances above the $250,000). Credit union members have never lost a penny of insured savings at a federally insured credit union and our industry’s deposit insurance fund has the backing of the full faith and credit of the U.S. government.

2023 Anthony J. Serafino Scholarship Awards

In accordance with the Bylaws, Arrha Credit Union held its annual meeting on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at 145 Industry Avenue, Springfield location. Ostrowski, welcomed everyone to the annual meeting and provided an update that included staff appreciation, positive financial performance, personalized member service, and high performance of the staff. The staff was applauded for their superior member service and sharing the latest technology with members to support their busy lives.

Chairman, Todd Cieplinski, thanked everyone for attending and noted a successful year. He recognized staff and Directors for their hard work and dedication. Jodi Turati, Director, recognized five $1,000, 2023 Anthony J. Serafino Scholarships, awarded to worthy students based on scholastic merit and civic achievement. Criteria used to evaluate the applicants were scholastic achievement, must be a senior high school student, must be a member or student whose parent is a member; outside activities, community endeavors, and intention to attend a two-year or four-year degree granting college or university. In addition to the scholarships, each student was given $100 to open an account with a debit card to jump start their financial future on a positive note.

The meeting ended with accolades for its members and their trust in us and staff.

In accordance with the Bylaws of Arrha Credit Union, the Board of Directors will be accepting nominations from its general membership for open board positions in the upcoming term. Arrha Credit Union’s Board of Directors is comprised of 11 member-volunteers responsible for developing and setting the credit union’s strategic direction. In 2023, 5 vacancies will be available for four, three year terms and one, two year term. The Committee will further evaluate all candidates to identify the best qualified nominees for director.

The Nominating committee is looking for:

Executive Level Business Experience
Professional work experience in the areas of Financial Services, Governance, Information Technology, Financial Management, Community Leadership, and Marketing/Communications
A passion for the credit union movement

To be eligible for a position on the board, a person must:

Be a primary member in good standing of Arrha Credit Union
Be at least 18 years of age
Have never been convicted of a crime involving dishonesty or breach of trust
Not be serving as a paid member of the credit union staff

Eligibility

Information regarding eligibility for these scholarships is listed below.

Eligibility is limited to high school seniors who will be enrolled in an undergraduate college degree program during the 2023-2024 academic year.
Applicant or parent/guardian must be a member of the sponsoring credit union.
Each applicant must complete a current 2023 Scholarship Application form and submit it no later than Friday, February 17, 2023 , by close of business, with the other required material(s) to:

The Scholarship Committee will select the scholarship winners evaluating each applicant on the same criteria: academic achievement, extracurricular/community activities and essay.

Scholarship winners will be selected by no later than Monday, March 13, 2023 and will be contacted by telephone shortly thereafter. Non-winners will also be notified by mail. An awards ceremony will be held at the annual meeting on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 and we ask that all winners be present.

SPRINGFIELD, MASS – December 6, 2022: Michael S. Ostrowski, President and CEO of Arrha Credit Union, congratulates Robert S. Ciraco, who has been promoted to the role of Executive Vice President, Chief Lending Officer. “Rob brings a lot of wisdom and experience to this role along with being a dedicated and valuable contributor at Arrha. The board of directors, senior team, and staff are thrilled to have Rob assume the EVP position,” Ostrowski said.

Rob joined Arrha in 2019, and served as Vice President, Chief Lending Officer for all aspects of residential and commercial lending. Rob has over 25 years in the financial services lending industry. During his extensive career he has been responsible for all aspects of lending. He was Vice President of Residential and Consumer Lending for Rockville Bank, a $2 Billion local community bank, where he was in charge of loan processing, underwriting, loan closings, quality control, secondary market sales, loan servicing and administration of all residential and consumer loan systems. After leaving Rockville, he built a highly successful, high volume, wholesale lending operations center to support east coast loan originations for a west coast wholesale lender as Director of Operations. Rob has been involved in youth hockey for 15+ years coaching and serving as a board member at several different hockey organizations.

Ostrowski, also notes, “many of us today have an interest in our ‘roots’ or family origin. Similarly, our own Credit Union has a most interesting origin. In 1929, 31 teachers from the Springfield School System began to meet at 32 Spring Street as an attempt to ensure financial security amongst its members. After several meetings, the Springfield Teacher’s Credit Union received, from the Commissioner of Banks and the Secretary of State, a Certificate of Incorporation on October 5, 1929. Phillip Fox was the first president and recorded assets of $2,160. For many years the credit union operated after school out of Room 125 at Commerce High School until property at 427 State Street was purchased in the 1960’s. The membership continued to grow over the next several decades until it became necessary to expand once again. Ground was broken on the current main office at 145 Industry Avenue in Springfield on November 4, 1988, and the credit union opened its doors on August 7, 1989. In 2015, after examining how to better serve all of our members and create an identity that truly represents who we are today, we decided to change our name to Arrha Credit Union. Arrha, meaning money in exchange for a contract, pledge, or earnest, is one of the oldest words in the English language and reflects our pledge to assist our members in reaching their financial goals by providing superior products and services in a personal manner. The credit union has continued to expand since that time and opened a branch in West Springfield at 63 Park Avenue on June 1, 2016. Since our humble beginnings, we have grown and expanded our membership to a much bigger community. COVID-19 Scams Are On The Rise

We are seeing an uptick in phishing scams for personal data and other confidential credentials. Phishing scams can take the form of emails, text messages, and social media messages that appear to be from a reputable source such as The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Elder fraud is another major scam we have been seeing amid this pandemic. An example would be a fake phone call from a loved one claiming to need money for treatment for COVID-19. Be cautious of requests for charities that ask for your personal account information over the phone or online as well. These fake charities often try to guilt you into donating.

Yes, those! Have you thought about how to manage money at all? Let’s talk about why it’s a good idea.

Why Learn About Money Now?

Why learn about banking, how to spend, borrow wisely and pay for college? Easy: These habits can stay with you your whole life. Also, you typically don’t learn these concepts in school, so it’s a good idea to study them yourself or with a trusted adult.

Money Topics You Won’t Learn in School

Quick — make a list of money topics your math teacher never brought up. Sure, she’ll teach you trigonometry basics till your brain hurts — but will she teach you about basic banking, borrowing and financial aid to pay for college?

Probably not.

It’s best to get a trusted adult (whether that’s a parent, a college admissions counselor , your school counselor, etc.) to walk you through complicated money concepts.

You probably know what savings accounts and checking accounts are, but do you know the technical details? Just in case, let’s go over what each one actually offers.

Savings Account

Checking Account

A checking account is a deposit account held at a financial institution that allows withdrawals and deposits. You can access checking accounts using checks, ATMs and electronic debits.

There’s no limit to the number of times you can access the money in a checking account, so you can use it for daily expenditures and to withdraw cash as often as you wish.

Some checking accounts that do pay interest offer a tiny interest rate, like 0.01%.

What do you do when someone gives you money for your birthday?

Outline Your Goals

When you save your money, you’ll be amazed at how it builds. Keep it in a savings account and you’ll see small incremental interest on your accounts.

Challenge yourself. How much can you save during a given month? Every six months? A year? How much do you want to save? Write it down — and why you’re saving your money.

Consider Investing

Remember how Uncle Sal kept bugging you about a Roth IRA? Turns out, Sal probably knows a little bit about money and is probably a great person to chat with. Turn to a trusted adult if you’re interested in investing.

How is saving different than investing? Saving (like putting money under your mattress) or in your piggy bank from third grade doesn’t do a good job of leveraging your money. Investing your money gives you the potential to earn more. Consider investing your money in a Roth IRA or a custodial account (that an adult helps you manage). You’ll be even more amazed at the power your money has when you invest.

Borrowing

Do you have access to a credit card? It’s an amazing way to build credit — it shows lenders in the future how well you can pay off debt.

So… What exactly is credit? Credit is borrowing money with the understanding that you'll pay later.

A few key concepts:

When you have a credit card, it’s a good idea to pay off your credit card every month.
If you borrow to go to college, you pay your student loans off later.

Someday, if you get a car loan to buy a car, you pay it off in installments — small payments every month.

Try to borrow only what you need and can pay back responsibly.

Paying for College

Paying for college deserves its own special category. Let’s talk a little bit about paying for college and what that involves.

One of the most important things you must realize is that college costs require more than just tuition, room and board. In fact, here are a few more common costs:

Financial Aid

Financial aid, laid out in something called a financial aid award, is the key to tackling all of these costs. Here’s a quick overview of the types of financial aid you can receive.

Grants

You don’t have to repay grants and you can tap into a number of state and federal government grants. Here are a few examples:

How secure is Apple Pay?

Apple Pay is safer than using a plastic credit, debit, or prepaid card. Every transaction on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac requires you to authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. Your Apple Watch is protected by the passcode that only you know, and your passcode is required every time you put on your Apple Watch or when you pay using Apple Pay. Your card number and identity aren’t shared with the merchant, and your actual card numbers aren’t stored on your device or on Apple servers.

What if my iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac is lost or stolen?

With Apple Pay, you authorize each purchase with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. These features help prevent other people from using Apple Pay on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac.

Can I continue to use my plastic credit, debit, or prepaid cards if I suspend or remove my cards in Wallet?

When you suspend or remove your cards in Wallet, your device-specific Device Account Number is suspended or removed. You can continue to use your plastic cards.

How Does Google Pay work?

Google Pay is the fast, simple way to pay in millions of places. After you add a card, you can: Pay in stores or for transit using your phone. Pay in apps or on websites. Send money to friends and family (US/UK only).

Do I need to add money to Google Pay?

You don’t need to add money to Google Pay in order to pay. All you need to do is add a payment method, like a debit or credit card. When you use Google Pay, it’s just like how you would normally use your card.

What happened to Android Pay and Google Wallet?

Android Pay and Google Wallet are now part of Google Pay. You can do all the same things you used to do with these apps, like pay in stores or send money to friends, using Google Pay.

How Safe is Google Pay?

Google Pay protects your payment info with multiple layers of security, using one of the world’s most advanced security infrastructures to help keep your account safe. When you pay in stores, Google Pay doesn’t share your actual card number, so your information stays secure.

The U.S. credit union system is a citizen-based, community-rooted network that reaches one in every three Americans. The international credit union system reaches 291 million members in 118 countries through 86,000 credit unions.

Many of the challenges that citizens around the world face have their impact at the community level. Those communities turn to their locally owned and led credit unions to mitigate those challenges. That is true today with the economic impact of the pandemic.

As local and national economies are impacted by the economic shock of COVID-19, credit unions are often

the first financial responder in helping their members cope with the economic impact. Credit unions help members restructure their finances to adjust to their impacted financial condition and become more tech- savvy. Small businesses turn increasingly to credit unions for workout assistance and finance, as they try to sustain or restart their business. Rural communities turn to their credit unions to provide an economic path for their young people and their community’s revitalization.

We say credit unions are different; what is that difference? Cooperative democracy is not an explicit determining factor when consumers decide which financial institution to choose financial services from. What consumers look for is the convenience, the cost and the quality of the service. They expect competitive pricing and service or they will find it elsewhere. These are their first-order, or necessary, conditions. Yet, price and convenience, even service can be very ephemeral in creating loyalty.

Across many countries, people comment that what stands out about credit unions is the passion with which they serve their members. The institutional mission is not driven by maximization of shareholder value or return on shares of a commercial stockholder owned institution. That internal passion and drive for member service comes from the cooperative structure and values. The one member, one vote cooperative principle notion that every member is as important as another is what drives the internal service culture of credit unions. It is not the cooperative structure and the democracy which the consumer sees. It is the resulting passion which drives the service that they like.

As they have done repeatedly through times of crisis, credit unions everywhere continue to help members through the pandemic. Credit unions provided repayment moratoriums on loans, interest waivers and interest free advances. Credit unions found ways to restructure and help their members’ finances when they lost their employment. Credit unions continued to serve their communities and lend money when other financial institutions pulled back on providing financing during the pandemic.

This is the credit union difference. The real hallmark of a credit union, of a cooperative, is to provide the member with the best alternatives for them for the long run versus the most profitable alternative for the credit union. These are their second-order, or sufficient, conditions for creating loyalty.

This is what members around the world, impacted by the economic fallout of the pandemic, notice and what they will remember. This is how credit unions help their members protect and improve their and their families’ lives. It is driven by the DNA of their cooperative mission, rather than an imposed corporate social responsibility program. This is different from the simple commoditization of financial services.

Credit unions must first meet the necessary conditions of convenience, cost and quality. Otherwise, consumers will move if credit union work to meet the second order conditions but do not maintain the necessary first order conditions.

2021 is the year that provides credit unions with the opportunity to exercise the credit union difference by helping members overcome the impact of the pandemic. It is a year to refresh the credit union brand.

This brand is happening around the world as credit unions address the root drivers of instability. They support food security, help people earn their livelihood and finance jobs, help members feed, clothe shelter and educate their families. In many parts of the world, they address the conditions of economic disruption that drive civil conflict and poverty. In doing so, credit unions provide for economic, and therefore, political stability.

In Latin America, credit unions reach low-income, small farmers, micro-entrepreneurs, small businesses and women, largely unserved by other financial institutions. Central American credit unions work to revitalize rural communities by integrating financial and real markets access to provide economic opportunities for young people. In Asia, credit unions participate in almost all commerce and production activities in local communities and play a major role in financial support for micro and small businesses working through the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis. Credit unions in Europe provide access to affordable financial services for the unserved and vulnerable populations.

Around the world, the credit union system is delivering far more than what individuals are actually seeing. Credit unions of course offer the same types of services that the banking system offers. These are the basis for all financial providers—offering deposit accounts and loans. In most cases, providers are primarily driven by financial reward to their bottom lines. We all recognize it and that is acceptable. An honest system with

trust should permeate through the system back to the borrower or depositor.

However, this has not always been the case. Poland lost all the money that individuals had in their credit union system at the end of World War II due to the theft from the Soviet Union. After the fall of communism in Russia, Poland resurrected its credit union system. It has been wildly successful. Here in the U.S. we have about 6% of the nation’s assets in the credit union system. Poland has approximately 16%—despite starting up from zero in 1989 after the trade unions in Gdansk gained certain concessions. Among those were allowing individuals to own their own businesses. Credit unions followed up immediately after that and gave the common citizen the financial power to deposit and lend in a cooperative fashion, free from government control. They had to meet regulatory standards, but the end result was positive for democracy.

In Cuba, a sort of informal financial cooperative exists. The farmers lend to one another with pooled money. The farmer is then able to get the tractors and other equipment necessary to farm. They have a difficult time getting it from the state-run financial institution(s). This financing is promoting democracy in a communist state. It would be nice if that could extend to the general public in the form of a credit union. In Puerto

Rico, Hurricane Maria had devastating effects. Michael Ostrowski, President and Chief Executive Officer of Arrha Credit Union, witnessed a financial system there that cared little about the outlying areas and kept its money in just seven banks. The local “co-operativas” (credit unions) rallied to make loans and defer payments. They were and continue to be the lifeblood of those outlying areas. They borrowed money from local businesses that were flush with cash to help their members. This happens because of the cooperative democratic principles that the credit unions are based on.

These financial arrangements through member owned cooperatives help democracy

grow. Earlier in the article, it mentions the credit union difference is its passion for its members and the ways that credit unions help during crisis and its communities. How true and how lucky to have a healthy credit union system in the United States.

To avoid the erosion of the credit union system, one is to continue to foster true democratic growth through membership growth; however, this can only happen if individuals recognize the value of having a credit union in its backyard. Credit unions are driven by and for its members due to its cooperative structure and member value culture; not shareholder value or profit culture. The loss of recognition by individuals like members and its communities who enjoy the difference that credit unions make is worrisome. However, credit unions are seeing a surge in appreciation and recognition due to the loss of local community banks. Individuals and community members are turning to their local credit unions for their borrowing and banking needs with local

decision-making. We are blessed to have credit unions in the United States and throughout the world who are laser focused on its members and their success.

Another worry that can erode the credit union system is the Big Banks and Fintech (virtual banks). As they get even bigger, with little regulatory oversight, what is going to happen to the great small institutions that took care of the community needs and do not always put the mighty dollar first? The comparative value of the credit union to Big Bank and Fintech is putting the economic welfare of its members and communities first

before the profit of the institution.

In a true extension of democratic ways, credit unions shine through in the United States and around the world offering services to the underserved in an inclusive, fair, and equitable fashion. On the front line, during a global pandemic, helping and educating members and their communities to overcome the impact of the crisis shouts out “we are all in this together.”

In accordance with the Bylaws, Arrha Credit Union held its annual meeting on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at 145 Industry Avenue, Springfield location. To ensure the safety of members and staff social distancing, temperature checks, face masks, and CDC cleanliness protocols were exercised.

President and Chief Executive Officer, Michael Ostrowski welcomed everyone and provided an update that included staff appreciation, positive financial performance, stellar member service, and high performance of the staff during these challenging times of COVID-19. The staff rose to the occasion and rallied to ensure members and each other were safe. All the while keeping a positive attitude and can do team spirit. Our team is even tighter; one's great character comes out during a crisis time.

Chairman, Todd Cieplinski, thanked everyone for attending and noted a successful year. He recognized staff and Directors for their hard work and dedication during a pandemic.

The meeting ended with accolades for its members and their trust in us and staff.
